We’ve seen it before. A horrifying, tragic event shocks the conscience of the nation. They are major cries for changes and calls for diversity. Fast forward to the near future, the nation shows signs of fatigue. Caring is apparently too taxing and people want to stop.
Unfortunately for those of us from underrepresented communities, the problem doesn’t go away simply because the larger society got tired of talking about it and was ready to move on. We’ll be ready to move on too when we can get the same jobs as our white male counter parts and when we can live anywhere we want to live.
How it will be different this time is two fold: The lie has been exposed. The melanin content in your skin does not imbue you with any special rights or intelligence. People of color, LGBTQ+, Indigenous persons and the Disabled can and deserve to take full measure of this country’s bounty. Finally, we will accept nothing less than full participation and we are not asking.
Storytelling is one of the most powerful weapons of social change. In order to take advantage of this power, we the members of the underrepresented, must take matters into our own hands. No more waiting for the larger society to come around. We must be the change we seek. We must do all we can to make the change possible.
